How Dumb Can Spitzer be?
When I heard the news about Eliot Spitzer yesterday, my first thought was, “What was he thinking?” In fact, that was what I said my mother answered the phone when I called her about it. Her answer? “Nothing. But we know what his little head was thinking.”
Unfortunately, that must be true because no one in their right mind and in a position like that, or of Sen. Larry Craig or Rep. Mark Foley or any of the other numb-nut (not literally, obviously) electeds who get themselves caught doing something wrong.
When do these people realize that in the 21st century, they’re not going to get away with it. They’re always going to get caught and until they get out of office, they should just keep in their pants.
Well, according to the NYTimes, politicans who break laws are not:
Dr. Frank Farley, a psychologist at Temple University, said that many politicians are what he calls Type T personalities, with T standing for thrill-seeking. “Politics is an uncertain business,” he said. “You’re at the whim of the electorate. There’s no tenure. It’s often hard to know what the criteria for success are. It’s either all or nothing — you either win or you lose. And so it inspires a risk-taking person to go into that line of work. But on the public side, they’re supposed to show stability and responsibility, and so this risky nature may show itself more on the private side.”
That may be so, but I have very little sympathy for these people. They’re asinine enough to want to be elected to office, and they’re asinine enough to do something stupid like hookers or taking bribes (like the “gleamingly clean” John McCain did. Remember the Keating 5?)
