Fucking Microsoft

I’ve been thinking for awhile about making the switch to a Mac the next time I buy a new computer. Mostly, the desire to switch has been based on aesthetics. Macs (especially the laptops) just look so pretty. Even the desktops and applications look nice when they’re running.

There are other reasons to make the switch. I know that. Apparently Macs are more stable and more intuitive in their operations. I’ve never experienced it and in the years and years that I’ve been using PCs, their so-called instabilty has never really bugged me. A frozen machine or a crashed program is just something that happens from time to time when you’re using a computer in the same way that a car breaks down. Since I’m not an early adopter, any OS or program I use is generally stable and plays nicely with windows.

Like I said, my reasons for switching were mostly aesthetic. Until today.

My trusty Dell Laptop is starting to show its age: It’s slow and weird problems keep cropping up. When I turned it on today, my Internet connection was mostly down (I could ping some sites, but not reach them with my browser). I haven’t made any changes to the system lately and I feared the worst: a hardware failure. While troubleshooting though, I remembered that Windows Update installed a new security patch last night and I thought maybe that might be a problem.

Lo and behold, MS update KB951748 doesn’t play nicely with ZoneAlarm, a firewall used by 60 million users around the world. Fer crying out loud, if Microsoft can’t make sure its updates work with one of the most popular FREE applications out there… they just don’t give a shit anymore.

So that’s it. I’m done. Next time I get a new computer (soon I hope), it’s gonna be a Mac.

Yes, that is a gold MacBook Pro. I stole the image shamelessly from Itechnews.

I was a pc user for years before I went to design school. There we worked exclusively on Macs and it was such a wonderful change. It was alway such a hassle to have to bring my Mac files from school to my crappy little pc at home. When I moved in with my husband (a Mac user) I finally got to get rid of my crappy pc and I haven’t missed it one bit. No more freezing, no more crashing, no more fantasizing about dropping it out a 5th floor window.
