100 things

1. I am a certified Scuba Diver
2. I learned how to dive in the Puget Sound which is a very cold body of water.
3. I really enjoy playing basketball.
4. I do not really enjoy coding for my Web site but have all these cool ideas for what I want it to do.
5. I have a cat named Jake.
6. I chose that name because I thought it would be a good name for a cat.
7. It is.
8. I grew up in New York City.
9. Some of my favorite books include: Catcher in the Rye, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, To Kill a Mockingbird and Everything is Illuminated. There are more that rank up there, but I can’t choose just one.
10. I just had the thought to make another 100 things list, but this time, make it 100 favorite books (in no particular order).
11. Part of me thinks that it would be much easier to come up with 100 books than with 100 interesting things about me.
12. I am a writer. Really. I get paid to write things.
13. I do not get paid to write this list.
14. One of my best friends in the world happens to be an ex-girlfriend.
15. Every year, I work at a festival here in Seattle called Bumbershoot. It is one of the highlights of my year even though I end up working a minimum of 12 hours a day for all of Labor Day weekend.
16. Every year, I take at least two weekend trips with 10-15 of my close friends. These are a type of trip that I have never heard of other groups of friends taking as regularly.
17. I hope I am wrong because they are a blast.
18. I was born in the 70s.
19. Now that I have finally started writing this list, I don’t want to stop. At the same time, I don’t want to just come up with random shit that happens to pop into my head, I want it to be filled with things that will tell you something about me.
20. I also want this list to be populated with the things that I think to put into it as I sit and write it in one fell swoop.
21. That kind of dilemma between two mutually exclusive facts is not an uncommon type of dilemma for me.
22. I have to stop now because I need to finish voting before I get too tired to read the candidate statements.
23. I really do read the candidate statements.
24. Once I got done voting, I left this list behind for a few days.
25. Most of the candidates I chose won.
26. Some of my favorite musicians are Phish, Jimi Hendrix, Half Light, Weary, Thelonius Monk, Iron and Wine, Ida, The Stares and The Wedding Present.
27. It’s easier for me to sleep when it’s cool out.
28. I hate to be cold.
29. I hope someday to own a hostel with a dive shop attached.
30. I’m very surprised at how much I like Prince’s new album, Musicology.
31. When I was six years old, my father died of skin cancer.
32. As a result of that, I went to 14 different schools between Kindergarten and 12th grade.
33. I grew up having a terrible temper which I still have to this day. Thankfully, I have learned to control it, mostly.
34. The thought of spending my life alone makes me feel as sad as anything else.
35. Mostly that’s because I am firmly convinced that if I decided to, I could never make another close connection with any new people.
36. I can very easily imagine myself making the choice to do that.
37. I realize how fucked up that is, yet, it just seems so much easier than always trying to get close to new people.
38. I firmly believe in reincarnation.
39. In my next life, I hope to be a domesticated house cat. That way, I can have an entire life of rest and be rejuvenated so I can come back again and keep learning.
40. I love to take pictures.
41. I hate to take digital pictures.
42. I love to have a lot of printed photos around.
43. If I had my druthers, this item would answer all questions about me.
44. If you understand why, then I like you by default.
45. I love to watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
46. On the other hand, I think that Angel is a wanker and that his show sucks.
47. I find most other TV insipid.
48. That doesn’t mean I don’t watch it anyway. I am as lazy as the next American.
49. The last time I went to see a therapist, I was 12 or 13 and I swore I’d never see another one because I didn’t like that I needed to pay someone to listen.
50. I think I’ve gotten over that now (update: I haven’t).
51. When I used to work at Amazon.com, I became friends with an old woman who published all of the original editions of Edward Gorey’s books.
52. I’ve got at least three months of The New Yorker to read before I am caught up.
53. I don’t know how I will ever be caught up.
54. Maker’s Mark is god’s drink.
55. I have had better whisky, it’s true.
56. Mix the stuff with Ginger Ale and a splash of Bitters and a twist of Lime and you’ll be drinking in heaven right next to God him(or her)self.
57. Fall is by far my favorite season.
58. Being alone, like many other things in my life, is a mixed bag of feelings. I love the chance to do what I want when I want, but I hate not having someone there to share it with too.
59. It’s been months since I added anything to this list. Seriously, this item is the first one I typed in a long time.
60. I stopped because I got really bored with my Web site and uninspired by life in general thanks to some really crappy personal shit going on.
61. That shit hasn’t stopped, but I’ve decided that I a) need to be distracted and b) can’t be concerned with it as much as I have been.
62. I’m not going to tell what the shit is. If you know me in the real world, you know. If you don’t, it’s not fodder for the Web.
63. Since I last added to this list, I bought a co-op apartment.
64. I know own two pieces of property which kind of surprises me.
65. For a little while, I had caught up pretty well on New Yorkers, but I’m behind again because I’m re-reading all five books of The Hitchhiker’s Trilogy. Yes, I said five books of the trilogy.
66. I had a birthday since I last wrote on this list too. I turned 31.
67. Like a lot of people, I get really excited by projects like this, and then distracted and forget all about them.
68. I sit on two boards. I am president of one of them.
69. I found a new current-favorite band this weekend: Ida.
70. Only 30 to go. I’m really hoping I finish this tonight.
71. More likely than not, I will be sleeping on the street the night before Episode 3 opens.
72. I’ve watched the trailers for that movie countless times already.
73. I’ve done the same for Hitchhiker’s.
74. Even though the number of people who will actually read this can probably be counted on my two hands, I want it to be true.
75. I no longer own a car.
76. I want to buy a bio-diesel/Waste Vegetable Oil one.
77. I’ve recently gotten to a point in my life where it is almost always worth it to me to pay more for something that does good in the world like organic vegetables and bio-diesel.
78. I have a stack of 25 or so CDs that I need to rip into my Ipod.
79. It’s taking me a long time to get to do that.
80. I have plans to start a Podcast.
81. I’m not sure what it will be about.
82. I have a terrible memory.
83. I can remember phone numbers very easily however.
84. I can turn my tongue upside down.
85. I can burp on command.
86. I am trying to learn how to cook, but it’s hard, because I don’t like to take the time to cook.
87. The only time I have been to the Southwest, it snowed.
88. I’ve lived through two hurricanes and two earthquakes.
89. I hate how difficult it has become to open CDs.
90. I live in Seattle now.
91. Recently, I discovered that I actually do like to go dancing.
92. Politics is fascinating to me and I hope to someday earn a living in it somehow.
93. I do NOT want to run for public office.
94. I am intimidated by math. It confuses me.
95. As a result, money is one of the scariest parts of my life.
96. Recently, sleeping has been the best part of my day.
97. I’ve also discovered that I like working out at the gym.
98. Until this weekend, it had been a long time since I had found any new music that really excited me.
99. I go through phases of loving to have music all around me all the time, and not caring one way or the other.
100. I am so excited to be done with this list!
